Where do you belong? What does it mean belonging? Have you ever felt you don't belong?
Belonging is one of the most important human experiences and fundamental for our identity. I started working on this collection because as a mixed heritage woman who constantly moved country and home; I often felt confused about my identity and where I actually belong. I thought I didn’t belong anywhere until I started looking inside myself and realised that actually, I rejected the idea of belonging because I associated it with owning. So I started researching what belonging means and how important it is. The feeling of belonging, wanting to fit in, find your place, people and roots.
My new collection explores the theme of belonging in relation to people, places and things. It’s an intimate and vulnerable collection.
Researching I found that belonging is a defining need for our identity which helps coping with intense emotions, shapes our social identity, the idea of self, health and so much more. Belonging is one of the most important human experiences and needs alongside Love.
I spent most of my childhood in different places around the world, my father was a business traveler and so we followed him everywhere. I remember vivid images of small houses in the desert, a cottage in Tunisia, my little dog in Ecuador, the cold of Denmark and lots of parks. Our base was in Cogoleto, a small town on the Ligurian Riviera in Italy. I spent the days admiring the sea in its immensity above the hill. My mom is Colombian and every winter or summer we went there for a month. After my parents' divorce, my mom met someone and so we moved, my heart was broken. After long years of battles, misunderstandings, I decide to move to London. Place where I live, create, and survive.
Between a painting, a reading and a documentary; I realize that I have often felt my sense of belonging shattered, that perhaps my loneliness also derives from this. At the same time, I started a search, inside myself, online and then I felt all these emotions and I realized that I had to find my sense of belonging with art, explore the unexplored within me. I made this collection because if you too feel lost, alone, you don't feel you belong anywhere, you are not alone. You have to celebrate who you are and you can do so by finding yourself, where you belong. Hope these paintings and stories can help your search. Belonging is one big story, all the paintings tell various moments of a story, a girl who seeks to find where she belong and the places, people and experiences in which she found herself.
Each painting comes with a mood board.
